Formula Used

Baseline box counts per bedroom, scaled by stuff factor and unit toggle.

Base boxes = bedrooms × boxes_per_room
Adjusted = Base × stuff_multiplier
Split: Small 40% · Medium 40% · Large 20%

Box volumes: Small 1.5 ft³, Medium 3 ft³, Large 5 ft³ — standard U-Haul / Home Depot sizes.

Example Calculations

2-bedroom apartment, average stuff: 2 × 10 = 20 boxes → Small 8, Medium 8, Large 4 (~70 ft³ total).

3-bedroom house, heavy (×1.4): 3 × 10 × 1.4 = 42 boxes → Small 17, Medium 17, Large 8.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many boxes do I need to move a 2-bedroom apartment?

On average, a 2-bedroom apartment requires 30–45 boxes: roughly 12–18 small boxes for books and kitchen items, 12–18 medium boxes for clothes and decor, and 6–9 large boxes for bedding and bulky items.

What size moving boxes should I buy?

Buy mostly small and medium boxes. Small boxes (1.5 ft³) are ideal for books, dishes, and heavy items. Medium boxes (3 ft³) work great for clothes, toys, and pantry goods. Large boxes (5 ft³) are best for pillows, comforters, and light bulky items.

Can I use free boxes instead of buying moving boxes?

Yes! Grocery stores, liquor stores, and bookstores often give away sturdy free boxes. Liquor store boxes have built-in dividers for glasses. For a large move, a mix of purchased and free boxes works well.

How do I estimate boxes for a kitchen?

A typical kitchen needs 10–15 boxes: 4–6 small boxes for dishes (well padded), 3–4 medium boxes for pots and dry goods, and 2–4 larger boxes for small appliances.

Is it better to overestimate or underestimate boxes?

Always overestimate slightly — running out of boxes on moving day is stressful. Buy 10–15% more than your estimate. Most retailers accept returns on unused flat-packed boxes within 30 days.

How does the stuff level affect the estimate?

Minimalist (×0.7) assumes you have decluttered. Average (×1.0) is a typical household. Heavy (×1.4) covers extensive book collections, craft rooms, garages, or multiple hobby rooms.
