Formula Used

Each furniture item has an approximate volume. The calculator sums total volume, adds 25% packing inefficiency, then matches the smallest standard unit that fits.

Required volume = sum(item_volume × qty) × 1.25
Recommended unit = smallest unit where unit_volume ≥ required

Example Calculation

1-bedroom apartment: Queen bed 50 ft³ + couch 60 ft³ + dresser 20 ft³ + 20 medium boxes 60 ft³ = 190 ft³ × 1.25 = 237 ft³ needed → 10×10 unit (800 ft³) recommended.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter quantities for each furniture type.
  2. Add your estimated box count by size.
  3. Toggle US or Metric units.
  4. Read the recommended unit size and total volume estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size storage unit do I need for a 1-bedroom apartment?

A 10×10 storage unit (100 sq ft, ~800 ft³) typically fits the contents of a 1-bedroom apartment including bed frame, mattress, dresser, small couch, dining table and chairs, plus 20–30 boxes.

What is the most popular storage unit size?

The 10×10 is the most rented self-storage unit size in the US. It offers a good balance of space and cost, fitting most 1-bedroom apartment contents. For larger households, the 10×20 is next.

How much does a storage unit cost per month?

US national averages (2025): 5×5 = $50–80/mo, 5×10 = $70–120/mo, 10×10 = $100–180/mo, 10×20 = $160–280/mo. Indoor climate-controlled units cost 20–50% more.

Should I get a climate-controlled storage unit?

Yes, for electronics, photos, artwork, musical instruments, or wooden furniture in areas with extreme temperatures or humidity. Climate-controlled units maintain 55–85°F year-round.

How do I maximize space in a storage unit?

Disassemble furniture where possible. Use uniform-sized boxes. Place heavy items on the bottom. Leave a center aisle for access. Use shelving units for vertical space. Label all boxes on multiple sides.

Can I store a car or motorcycle in a self-storage unit?

Yes — a 10×20 unit fits most standard vehicles. Partially drain fluids and disconnect the battery for long-term storage. Some facilities require proof of insurance and registration.
